Team Gale-- Spoilers!
Well folks, I'm starting my English blog with The Hunger Games. I can't help it-- it's the book I'm reading for fun right now, and Peeta is on my mind. I have to admit I'd been hoping that in the second time reading the series I'd join Team Peeta like the rest of the world. But I just CAN'T!
Gale-- Best friend. Gets Katniss. Shares interests. Bonds. Real. Sexy.
Peeta-- Tribute. Obsesses over Katniss. Has nothing in common. Kept at a distance. Surreal. Sturdy.
So how can you not go for Gale?
Now, before I start raving about Gale, I do have to admit that I did warm up to Peeta a little more after watching the move-- he seems to be legitimately in love with Katniss, and he's kind of cute. But in the book, Katniss is never sure about him. Is he for real? Is he faking it? Is he just playing for the cameras? She never knows, so she never dares to jump in. How can I condone her choice for Peeta if he's just the easier fall back?
Gale is the intriguing one. He understands how Katniss works, and they have everything in common. Getting with Gale would have been difficult, and way more interesting. Difficult because it would have broken Peeta's heart, angered the government, endangered families. Hence the interesting. Broken hearts are emotionally charged! Angry governments inspire fear! Endangered families commit acts of heroism! That's difficult, and that's interesting.
This is fiction, and I want crazy endings, but "oh I guess I'll go with the easy option because we've almost died together and stuff" ??? Come on! I know happy endings aren't always going to happen, and I'm perfectly fine with it! Killing Peeta (GASP!) would not have been a happy ending, but it would have resolved all the tension in a crazy and interesting way. That's what I want in my reading for pleasure-- tears, death, and the girl to end up with the right guy. Is that really too much to ask?
Now, I'm about to start re-reading Catching Fire and then Mockingjay. Maybe I'll change my mind once I get to the end again-- I'll let you know. But so far, I'm all TEAM GALE!

Good book. How do we follow your blog?
ReplyDeleteFrom your email, click on the "Blogger" tab. The first page that comes up will have an "Add" button-- click it! It's pretty self-explanatory from there :)
ReplyDeleteI have to cover the screen in order to NOT see what you have written about the hunger games, because I am planning to read the second two in the series as soon as I can. Thanks at least for putting "SPOILER" at the top!
ReplyDeleteBtw how do we follow others, or know who to follow off of your page?
You can type their URLS in the same way you did mine. The easiest way is probably to see who's already following me!
DeleteHey Mrs. Foreman! Glad to have found your blog. I thought I was good with technology until I visited blogger. It's tough. Anyways, did I successfully follow your blog? I can't tell.
ReplyDeleteHi Grace-- I am thoroughly confused by blogger too, but since I don't consider myself tech-savvy, I haven't worried about it too much :) You DID manage to follow me, and I think I've managed to follow you, too!
ReplyDeleteSo I am not sure If we are supposed to be commenting on the book here but I am going to do it anyway. I was wondering if you thought if it was likely that the Hunger games is a parallel to ancient Rome considering among other things the gladiatorial nature of the games themselves and the fact that the book uses around 8 or 9 names from the play Julius caesar
ReplyDeleteKeegan-- I NEVER thought about the gladiator connection, but now that you say it, I feel really dumb for never thinking of it myself! I did notice all of the Julius Caesar names, but I didn't think about the larger Rome connection. I think you nailed it!!!
